The Game Boy DMG-01 (DMG = Dot Matrix Game) is Nintendo's original handheld, launched in April 1989 in Japan by Gunpei Yokoi. Built around a Sharp LR35902 processor at 4.19 MHz and a 160×144 pixel reflective monochrome LCD, the DMG-01 was deliberately designed for ruggedness and battery life (30h on 4 AA batteries) rather than raw performance — a strategic choice against the more powerful but far more power-hungry Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear. Bundled with Tetris in the West, it sold more than 118 million units across all revisions (Game Boy + Game Boy Pocket + Game Boy Color). This unit is 'Made in Japan', matching the earliest production runs — later models being made in China. The serial number G19973670 dates it roughly to the 1991-1992 period.
