What is an Amiga IFF / ILBM file?

IFF (Interchange File Format) was the standard image container on the Commodore Amiga, with images stored as ILBM (InterLeaved BitMap). Programs like Deluxe Paint, Personal Paint and AMOS read ILBM natively. This converter turns a modern PNG, JPEG, BMP or GIF into a palettised IFF/ILBM ready to open on a real Amiga or in an emulator — reducing the picture to an OCS/ECS-friendly palette of 2 to 32 colours, with optional dithering. Everything runs locally in your browser: your image is never uploaded.

How to use your IFF on a real Amiga or emulator

  1. Convert your image above and download the .IFF file.
  2. Deluxe Paint IV / Personal Paint: open the .IFF directly — it loads as a native picture.
  3. Workbench 3.x: with picture datatypes installed, open it in MultiView, or set it as a background.
  4. Transfer to real hardware: copy the .IFF to a CF/SD card (PFS3/FAT), an ADF, or over the network (Amiga Explorer, FTP) and open it on the Amiga.
  5. Emulators (WinUAE, FS-UAE, Amiberry): drop the file onto a mounted hard-drive directory and open it from Workbench.
  6. Blitz Basic 2 developers: copy the generated ColSplit values into your source to reproduce the exact palette in your demo or game.

FAQ

What is an ILBM file?

ILBM (InterLeaved BitMap) is the Amiga's native bitmap image format, stored inside an IFF container.

How do I open an IFF image on a real Amiga?

Open it in Deluxe Paint, Personal Paint, or via Workbench 3 picture datatypes / MultiView, after transferring it by CF card, ADF or network.

Does it work with Deluxe Paint?

Yes, the output is plain uncompressed ILBM, tested with Deluxe Paint IV.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The whole conversion happens in your browser; nothing leaves your device.

Can I use the palette in Blitz Basic 2 or AMOS?

Yes, the tool generates ready-to-paste ColSplit values for Blitz Basic 2; the palette also works for AMOS and other tools.

OCS, ECS or AGA?

This tool targets OCS/ECS (up to 32 colours). For AGA-specific modes (HAM8, 256 colours) use a dedicated AGA tool.
