RS-232C serial interface for Color Computer
The Deluxe RS-232 Program Pak is a hardware expansion cartridge (not just software) that adds a real RS-232C serial port to the Color Computer. The heart of the Deluxe RS-232 Pak is the Synertek 6551 ACIA, featuring a built-in baud rate generator, programmable interrupts, a status register, false start bit detection and an echo mode. Unlike the software serial port ('bit-banger') built into the CoCo — limited in speed and monopolising the CPU — this Pak offers a true hardware UART. It was indispensable for anyone wanting to connect a fast modem, run a BBS, or use a high-speed terminal. It was the reference peripheral for BBSes on the CoCo for years. This unit is the continental Europe trilingual FR/NL/DE version, still in its original blister attached to the green cover.
